Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
